Is Light Beer Better for You?

Is light beer all that it’s claimed to be? Is it healthier? Does it help you keep your weight down?

Some people say it’s all hype.

Here are the facts.

While beer may never be considered a ‘health drink,’ beer in general has quite a range of health benefits.

And light beer has even more.
The Health Benefits of Drinking Beer
So what are the benefits of beer?
Well, beer is brewed with hops or malt, and in both of these are things called polyphenols.
Polyphenols are found naturally in some plants and foods including wine and dark chocolate, and they are great for health. 
Mainly, polyphenols help decrease the risk of cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.  They are thought to lower blood sugar levels, prevent blood clots, help with digestion, and improve your memory, among other things.    This doesn’t mean that if you drink a pint of beer a day, you’re going to have perfect health, because we know that that’s not true.  It does mean that drinking a moderate amount of beer a day has been proven to lower your chances of heart attacks and strokes.  And, the vitamin B in beer also helps lower your risk of heart disease.  Again, let me emphasize the word moderate. Party drinking and drinking ‘til you puke is not healthy for a handful of reasons. To be able to reap the health benefits of beer, you’ll have to break off from those still wet behind the ears.  Wave goodbye to your unhealthy drinking habits.
So, What About Light Beer?
Light beer has all the health benefits of regular beer and more! Firstly, what is light beer? ‘Light beer’ just means beer with a lower alcohol content. 
However, the definition of light beer changes for each beer company since there’s no regulation.
For instance, one light beer can have a 4.3% alcohol content, another can have 3.2%, and another can have 6%. As you can see, the scope for ABVs (Alcohol By Volume) is all over the place.  Since the average beer ABV is 4.5%, you can’t really call something above 4.5% a light beer.  That’s why, you should always check the ABV of a beer before buying or drinking it.  Clearly just calling something ‘light’ doesn’t always mean it’s actually a light beer.  Be an informed consumer and read the label before buying.  An easy-to-remember rule of thumb is, more alcohol means more calories!  Drinking beer with a high ABV is basically like eating a handful of cookies or drinking a can of soda.  Having too high of a calorie intake can actually lead to blood clots, and blocked arteries. That’s definitely not something that you want to have to think about when trying to enjoy a cold glass of beer.
What are Calories and How Many are Too Many?
We’ve all heard of calories. They’re something that most of us think about in the back of our minds whenever we buy and eat processed foods. And we hear about them whenever people decide to go on a diet to lose weight. But what are they?
A calorie is a unit of heat energy. Calories create energy and heat in our bodies that give us energy. When we do physical activities, our bodies burn those calories, sort of like how coal is burned in a grill to create fire.
Clearly, calories are necessary for our survival, but too many calories can cause weight gain and obesity.
The average woman needs 2,000 calories per day to function properly, and the average man needs 2,500.
Most beers have over 100 calories per serving, so if you drink a few cans a night, that’s hundreds of extra calories that are going into your system.
If you aren’t burning those calories, then you better be ready for your beer belly -- also called abdominal obesity.

What About Carbs?
Most beers are brimming with calories and carbs. Carbohydrates are basically sugars that are found in nuts, breads, starches, and definitely in beers.
Carbs are required every day to remain in good health, but like with anything, having too many causes more harm than good. 
Too many carbs in your diet can lead to obesity and type 2 diabetes. Low-carb diets are extremely popular these days, and they are proven to lead to weight loss, and better cholesterol, blood sugar, and blood pressure levels.
Plus, too many carbs can actually make you feel exhausted! They can give you a short burst of energy and make you feel great, but give it an hour or two and your insulin levels will drop, leaving you feeling weak and tired. 
That means that the more extra carbs your drinking means more time spent laying around, which will ruin your body and lead to you missing out on life. Just checking a beer’s ABV won’t tell you about its carb content. A beer can have a lower ABV while having the same amount or more carbs than its higher ABV counterpart.  So be cautious and stay informed.  A good light beer will contain less calories AND less carbohydrates, but not all light beers are made the same.  If you want to be able to keep up a healthy, active lifestyle, and don’t want to have to worry about forming a beer belly, make sure you avoid too many calories and carbs.  The best way to do that is by drinking low-cal, low-carb light beers, and FRIO is just that.  So, when you’re choosing what case of beer to bring over to a BBQ, or on that camping trip you’ve been planning, don’t let the calories and carbs of your beer drain your energy -- pick up a light beer instead.
